Memory Function and Ways to Preserve It Over The Lifespan

Memory is one of the most complicated and poorly understood functions of the brain. Our ability to remember provides us with a past and present and enables us to plan for the future. More fundamental is the fact that memory enables our life story and our ability to share such with others. From an inability to recall information presented minutes earlier to supra-memory performance and even recall while unconscious our study of memory is never boring. Neuroscience has discovered structures critical to memory and learning, different memory subsystems, and diseases/conditions that affect our ability to learn and remember.

This presentation will provide an understanding of neuroanatomical substrates that underlie memory, different subtypes of memory and how each is expressed/measured, and how conditions such as dementia, mood disorder, and medication sides effects can negatively impact our ability to learn and remember. The difference between normal age-related memory change, mild cognitive impairment and dementia will be provided. Finally, modifying medical, lifestyle, and medication variables will be discussed as ways to help limit memory loss particularly as we get older.
